What to expect in a treatment

This is not your typical full body massage! Your concerns will be fully addressed during your visit. You can request a specific technique or you can let your therapist tailor a treatment to best suit your needs. Our team of talented therapists have dealt with and treated a wide range of conditions and will ensure that you will leave with a sense of relief.

During a treatment we may use a combination of the following modalities that will suit your need: Myofascial Dry Needling, Trigger Point Therapy, Muscle Energy Technique, PNF Stretching, Myofascial Release, Lymphatic Drainage for swelling and more.

Modalities Used During Treatment

Trigger Point Therapy

During treatment, the therapist will use static pressure applied directly on the trigger point which will help to inactivate it. This usually will be followed by deep stroking and stretching to restore the natural resting length of the muscle.

A myofascial trigger point is a hyperirritable spot in a muscle that is associated with a sensitive nodule within a taut band. The spot is painful on compression and can give rise to characteristic referred pain and tenderness. A muscle with a trigger point is prevented, usually by pain, from reaching its full range of motion and will be restricted in its strength and endurance.
Deactivating the trigger point will help to decrease the amount of pain, therefore increasing mobility and strength of the muscle.

Trigger point pain can be the cause of many issues including: headaches, jaw and facial pain, sciatica like pain, postural issues, neck and back pain, carpal tunnel like pain, and more.

Myofascial Release Therapy

Myofascial release (MFR) therapy focuses on releasing muscular shortness and tightness. There are a number of conditions and symptoms that myofascial release therapy addresses.
Many patients seek myofascial treatment after losing flexibility or function following an injury or if experiencing ongoing back, shoulder, hip, or virtually pain in any area containing soft tissue.
Other conditions treated by myofascial release therapy include Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) disorder, carpal tunnel syndrome, or possiblyfibromyalgia or migraine headaches. Patient symptoms usually include:
  • Tightness of the tissues that restricts motion or pulls the body out of alignment, causing individuals to favor and overuse one hip or shoulder, for example
  • A sense of excessive pressure on muscles or joints that produces pain
  • Pain in any part or parts of the body, including headache or back pain

Muscle Energy Technique

Muscle Energy Technique (MET) is a manual therapy that uses the gentle muscle contractions of the client to relax and lengthen muscles and normalize joint motion. Post Isometric Relaxation (PIR) – Muscle to relax after an isometric contraction (Basis of MET).

Myofascial Dry Needling

Myofascial Dry Needling is a safe and effective method of treatment for musculoskeletal conditions. It is the art of using needles to deal with trigger points which results in a twitch of a muscle as it grabs onto the needle.
It is in no way, shape or form related to acupuncture. The only similarity between acupuncture and dry needling would be the use of the needles however the methodology behind it is different. Acupuncture focuses on the diagnosis of the problem whereas dry needling is all about finding muscles with hypertenicity and releasing that tension.

It is an invasive procedure where a needle is inserted into the skin and muscle directly at a myofascial trigger point. The trigger point itself is made up of contraction knots which are linked to the continuous pain.

Proper dry needling will cause, what is called a LTR or local twitch response. These LTR’s improve the treatment outcomes. After the muscle twitch’s, it then relaxes further, relieving pain and the restriction of motion.

As inserting the needle can be painful, this is not for everyone however if you can overcome the pain, the benefits are worthwhile. Whilst we are inserting a needle, we are not injecting anything, The pressure from the needle being inserted into the muscle causes a spasmodic reaction and, in turn, relaxes the muscle.

Dry needling focuses directly on the muscle and its aim is to release the built up tension. If you have a problem with tightness within a specific area, we suggest you try dry needling and see if you feel a difference.

We are more than happy to answer any questions you may have regarding the process. Please do not hesitate to ask.
